A deadly gas tanker explosion near Basti Hamidpur Chowk on Narwala Road, Multan, killed six people and injured 40 others on Monday.
According to initial police reports, the blast happened during an illegal LPG refilling operation. A fire broke out, and those involved fled without alerting authorities. The flames triggered a powerful explosion, sending debris flying into nearby homes and causing more fires.
Rescue teams rushed the injured to Nishtar Hospital, where nine people are in critical condition. Among the injured are 15 women, three children, and a pregnant woman, who has been shifted to the hospital’s gynecology ward.
Police have registered a case against 15 suspects, eight of whom have been identified. Three suspects have already been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.
City Police Officer Sadiq Ali Dogar visited the site, monitored rescue efforts, and assured that those responsible would face justice.
Former Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani expressed condolences and urged the hospital to provide the best care for the injured. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif condemned the incident and ordered strict safety measures for LPG handling and an immediate investigation.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali Bukhari confirmed that the explosion was caused by an illegal LPG siphoning operation.
