OpenAI Signs $200 Million AI Deal with U.S. Military

OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence company based in San Francisco, has signed a $200 million contract with the U.S. Department of Defense. The goal is to use advanced AI technology to help the military solve important national security problems.

According to the Defense Department, OpenAI will work on developing new AI tools that can support both military operations and everyday tasks within the military. This project is the first of its kind under OpenAI’s new plan to bring AI into government use.

OpenAI said the technology could improve many areas, including how service members receive healthcare and how cyber threats are managed. All military uses of AI will follow OpenAI’s rules and ethical guidelines, the company confirmed.

More tech companies like OpenAI, Meta, and Palantir are now working with the U.S. military. Palantir, co-founded by tech billionaire Peter Thiel, is already well-known for its defense work.

Last year, OpenAI also partnered with defense company Anduril Industries. Together, they are building AI systems to help protect against threats such as drones and other unmanned aircraft.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company’s goal is to make AI helpful for as many people as possible. He added that OpenAI supports the U.S. in making sure AI is used in a way that supports democracy and safety.
