MIT Study Warns ChatGPT Might Be Hurting Critical Thinking Skills

A new study by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has raised concerns about how tools like ChatGPT might be affecting people’s thinking abilities. The study suggests that while ChatGPT is helpful for quick answers and writing support, relying on it too much could weaken critical thinking skills over time.

The researchers found that when people used ChatGPT to solve problems, they were more likely to accept its answers without questioning them. This means users may stop thinking deeply about complex topics or checking facts on their own. Instead of analyzing or researching, they might blindly follow whatever the AI says—even when it’s wrong.

In the study, participants were given tasks that required reasoning. Some used ChatGPT, while others worked without help. The group using ChatGPT finished faster but scored lower when it came to accuracy and understanding. The researchers say this shows a growing risk: convenience may be replacing careful thought.

MIT’s team isn’t saying people should stop using AI tools, but they recommend using them with caution. AI can be helpful, but people should still think critically, verify information, and stay engaged in the learning process.

Experts suggest that schools, workplaces, and individuals find a balance—using ChatGPT as a helpful tool, not a replacement for thinking.
