Amazon CEO Andrew Jassy has warned staff that artificial intelligence (AI) could replace some jobs at the company in the next few years. In a message to employees, he said that AI tools, like chatbots and smart systems that work on their own, will change how work is done. This means fewer people will be needed for some current roles, while new types of jobs will also be created.
Amazon currently has 1.5 million employees around the world, with around 350,000 in office roles like software development and marketing. Jassy said that as AI continues to grow, the number of corporate jobs may go down.
He explained that in the future, billions of AI agents will be used in all areas of life and business—from shopping and travel to everyday tasks. While many of these AI systems haven’t been built yet, Jassy said they’re coming fast.
Other business leaders also believe AI could cause big job losses. The CEO of UK telecom company BT and the head of AI firm Anthropic both said AI might replace many entry-level office jobs. Reports from global organisations suggest that skilled jobs in areas like law, medicine, and finance are at high risk.
Jassy encouraged Amazon workers to learn more about AI and take training. He said those who adapt and grow with AI will play an important role in the company’s future.
