LAHORE: The Punjab government is stepping up its fight against pollution by planning to make fitness certificates mandatory for motorcycles.
Currently, only cars and other vehicles are required to have a fitness certificate, but under a new proposed law—the Provincial Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2025—motorcycles will also need to meet annual fitness standards.
Officials say this change is crucial as motorcycles make up nearly 85% of the transport in Punjab. By ensuring motorcycles are in good condition, the government hopes to improve air quality and reduce smog in major cities like Lahore.
The proposed amendment will be added to Clause 38-A of the Provincial Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1965, inserting the word “motorcycle” next to “vehicle.” Once passed, all motorcycles in Punjab will need to obtain a fitness certificate valid for one year.
The bill has already been forwarded to a committee in the Punjab Assembly, and they are expected to submit their report within the next two months.
Authorities believe this move is a key step toward controlling air pollution and making Punjab’s cities healthier for everyone.
