In a significant development, the Government of Pakistan has decided to hand over the operational management of Islamabad International Airport to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance the efficiency and service standards of Pakistan’s major airports by involving foreign expertise. The decision follows an agreement between Pakistan and the UAE, under which a UAE-based firm will take charge of handling airport operations, including ground services, passenger facilitation, and overall management.
The handover does not imply a sale or permanent transfer of ownership; instead, it is a management contract aimed at improving service quality and aligning the airport with international standards. Pakistani authorities believe that this partnership will lead to better customer experience, improved infrastructure, and increased revenue through enhanced commercial activities at the airport.
This initiative is in line with the government’s push to attract foreign investment and improve public-private collaboration. It is also part of a larger plan to eventually modernize other airports in the country. Officials have stated that the rights of Pakistani workers at the airport will be safeguarded and that the management contract will include strict performance benchmarks.
