KARACHI – A Karachi court has ordered K-Electric to pay Rs1.93 crore in compensation to the family of a six-year-old boy who died due to electrocution during heavy rains in 2017.
The victim, Azaan, tragically lost his life when he came into contact with exposed wires. The court ruled that K-Electric’s negligence, including failure to properly insulate or guard its wires, was responsible for the incident.
Senior Civil Judge East, Amberin Jamal, directed K-Electric to compensate Azaan’s family. Advocate Usman Farooq, representing the family, emphasized that the verdict acknowledged the utility company’s failure to ensure public safety.
The incident occurred amid Karachi’s monsoon rains, where poorly maintained electrical infrastructure has often posed serious risks to residents. Azaan’s case drew widespread attention, highlighting the need for stricter safety standards.
This ruling is seen as a major step in holding corporations accountable for safety failures. Legal experts hope it will encourage stronger enforcement of public safety measures and better infrastructure maintenance to prevent similar tragedies.
K-Electric has faced repeated criticism for electrocution cases during Karachi’s rainy seasons, raising concerns about its infrastructure and safety protocols. The case serves as a call to action for improved urban safety measures and reforms in electricity distribution.
