Committee Formed to Investigate Murder of Seven-Year-Old Sarim

KARACHI: A day after the post-mortem report of seven-year-old Sarim was released, a four-member committee was set up by the DIG West on Tuesday to investigate the findings, ARY News reported.

Sarim’s lifeless body was discovered in an underground water tank near his home in North Karachi, 11 days after he went missing on January 7. At the time, he was returning from a nearby madrasa.

According to the initial investigation, the tank’s lid was covered with a carton. The post-mortem report confirmed that Sarim had been sexually abused, tortured, and murdered.

SSP Anti Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) Anil Haider confirmed the child’s death was the result of strangulation, and that his neck had been broken. The medical report also showed multiple injuries on his body. Authorities believe Sarim was murdered five days before his body was found in the tank.

While Sarim’s body was discovered 11 days after he went missing, the investigation revealed that he may have been kept alive for a few days before being killed and disposed of.

As part of the investigation, police are conducting a DNA test on a close relative of the child, who is under suspicion.

Following the disturbing findings, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Karachi West, Irfan Baloch, formed a committee to further probe the case. The committee, led by DSP Central Investigation, includes officers from the Investigations Branch.

The committee will investigate the apartment complex where Sarim’s body was found and the events leading up to his tragic death.
