Veteran Journalist Zubeida Mustafa Passes Away in Karachi

Zubeida Mustafa, a legendary journalist and champion of social justice, has passed away in Karachi at the age of 84. A pioneer for women in media, she spent more than five decades sharing insightful stories about education, health, and human rights.

Born in 1941 in pre-Partition British India, Zubeida moved to Pakistan and later completed her master’s degree in international relations from the University of Karachi. She began her career as a research officer and went on to become an assistant editor at Pakistan’s leading newspaper, serving from 1975 until her retirement in 2008. Throughout her career, she focused on pressing social issues and gave a voice to the underprivileged.

She was the first Pakistani woman to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Women’s Media Foundation in 2012. Her work brought her respect and admiration, as she advocated for education, women’s rights, and health care. Her deep empathy and pursuit of truth set her apart and inspired generations of journalists.

The Karachi Press Club described her as an “institution,” praising her unwavering commitment to truth and justice. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan called her departure an “irreparable” loss, highlighting her lifelong dedication to the oppressed.

Zubeida’s legacy goes beyond her writings. She served as a mentor, educator, and role model. Her dedication to ethical reporting and social causes leaves a lasting impact on journalism in Pakistan. As the nation mourns her passing, her work and principles will continue to guide future generations in media and beyond.
