ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s cellular subscriber base has grown to an impressive 193.2 million as of November 2024, with a mobile teledensity of 79.1%, according to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
The data also shows strong growth in mobile broadband users, which now total 139 million, achieving a mobile broadband penetration rate of 56.9%.
Other stats reveal that fixed telephone subscribers stand at 3 million, with a fixed teledensity of 1.1%, while total broadband subscribers have reached 143 million, reflecting a broadband penetration rate of 58.39%.
In a National Assembly session, Parliamentary Secretary Sajid Mehdi shared updates on government actions to curb anti-state activities and misinformation. He disclosed that 86,000 SIMs were blocked for anti-state activities and the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) had been temporarily restricted to counter fake news.
Mr. Mehdi further revealed that amendments to the Electronic Crimes Act are underway to strengthen regulations against misinformation. He also mentioned restrictions on VPN usage as part of these efforts.
The government’s efforts aim to maintain security and prevent the spread of false information in the country.
