Chief Engineer Removed as Karachi Water Pipeline Burst Investigation Delayed

Pipeline burst caused flooding at Karachi University and water shortage across the city.

KARACHI – The Chief Engineer of the Water Trunk Main (WTM), Zafar Palijo, has been removed from his position as the investigation into the 84-inch pipeline burst in Karachi continues.

In his place, Superintending Engineer Muhammad Ejaz has been given additional charge as acting Chief Engineer.

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) had set up a three-member committee on April 30 to investigate the major pipeline failure, which severely disrupted water supply in various parts of the city and caused flooding at the Karachi University campus.

The committee, which includes the DMD Planning, a Superintending Engineer, and an Executive Engineer, was initially given seven days to submit its findings. However, even after 13 days, the probe has not been completed.

One of the committee members revealed that the inquiry team is facing pressure and lack of cooperation from certain officials, which has delayed the investigation.

The burst pipeline flooded a large area of Karachi University, even damaging homes of faculty and staff, and made the ongoing water crisis worse for residents across the city.

Though repair work has been completed on the damaged line, Karachi’s water supply issues remain unresolved.
