The Dark Reality of Human Smuggling
Meanwhile, the harsh realities of human smuggling continue to unfold. Jamal Shah, a 24-year-old student from Sialkot, shared his terrifying journey of attempting to migrate illegally.
“We had to escape armed border guards in every country we passed, fearing arrest or worse,” he recalled.
However, once smugglers saw an opportunity to demand more money, they turned violent. They beat and tortured Jamal, recording videos to send to his family as a ransom threat. His family paid Rs 1.5 million, securing his release.
“If they hadn’t, I would have been killed,” he said with a trembling voice.
Jamal is just one of many victims who fall into the trap of human smuggling networks every year.
False Promises and Trapped Dreams
Asghar Ali, a 38-year-old vendor from Gujranwala, shared a similar experience. He was lured in by an agent who showed him fake success stories of people reaching Italy and Spain.
“I fell for it,” Ali admitted.
The agent demanded Rs 1 million, promising a smooth journey. Ali managed to arrange half the amount, believing he would pay the rest after reaching Europe. But once the payment was made, the agent blocked his number and disappeared, leaving him in crippling debt.
From Smuggling to Human Trafficking
Many illegal migrants fall victim to human trafficking. Smugglers hold them hostage and demand ransom from their families. These criminals, operating within Pakistan and internationally, mentally and physically abuse their victims, recording their suffering to pressure families into paying large sums for their release.
This growing issue raises serious concerns about human rights violations and the urgent need for action to combat these dangerous smuggling networks.
