Careem, the popular ride-hailing service, will stop operating in Pakistan starting July 18, after nearly 10 years in the country. CEO Mudassir Sheikha shared this news on LinkedIn, calling it a tough decision. He explained that factors like Pakistan’s tough economic situation, increasing competition, and challenges in securing enough investment made it difficult to continue the service at the required level.
Sheikha also praised Careem’s team in Pakistan, highlighting achievements like offering safe rides, empowering women to travel independently, and bringing digital payments to everyday life. He also noted that Careem helped create jobs for many people, contributing to Pakistan’s digital growth.
Although Careem will stop offering ride-hailing services, the company’s operations in Pakistan will continue in a different role. Careem Technologies, which is building the “Everything App,” will remain active in Pakistan. This app covers services like food delivery, payments, and more.
Sheikha mentioned that Careem has over 400 employees in Pakistan working on the app, and the company plans to grow further with more job opportunities, including a program for top university graduates.
Careem’s customer support service, Careem Care, will be available until September 18 to assist with any pending issues. Users can also expect clear instructions on how to reclaim any remaining balance in their Careem Wallet.
