The Sindh government has announced a sponsorship of Rs4.7 million for Pakistani boxer Aliya Soomro to take part in a boxing tournament in Dubai this August. Aliya, 19, will face an Indian opponent in the match. She said the support from Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah felt like a dream come true.
Aliya is from Lyari and has become a well-known name in Pakistan’s sports world. Her journey is not just about her own success, but also about fulfilling the dream of her father, a former footballer and daily wage earner. Aliya often says her wins are for her father and for all the girls in Pakistan who dream big.

Earlier this year, Aliya made history by becoming the first Pakistani woman to win a world boxing title. She defeated Thailand’s Sothida Gunya Noch in just 45 seconds to claim the WBA Asia 105-pound title in Bangkok.
To honour this, CM Shah hosted a special event at CM House, where Aliya received a Rs1 million cash prize and was presented with a Sindhi Ajrak. UNICEF also recognised her for her talent and unbeaten record in national events.
In the Sindh Assembly, MPA Shazia Karim submitted a resolution to acknowledge Aliya’s achievements. CM Shah praised her as a true “daughter of Sindh” and promised continued support for women in sports.
