Six tourists lost their lives on Thursday when a tourist submarine sank near Hurghada, a popular Egyptian resort on the Red Sea, state media reported.
According to the state-owned Akhbar Al-Youm, all six victims were foreign nationals. Nineteen others were injured and taken to local hospitals, while authorities launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
Hurghada, located about 460 kilometers southeast of Cairo, is a major tourist destination known for its coral reefs and islands. The region’s thriving tourism industry plays a key role in Egypt’s economy, employing millions and contributing over 10% of the GDP.
The submarine reportedly belonged to Sindbad Submarines, a company that claims to operate the “only real” recreational submarine in the area. While many boats offer snorkeling and diving trips in the Red Sea, submarine tours provide a unique underwater experience for visitors.
Officials are now examining how the tragic accident occurred and whether safety regulations were followed.
