MUZAFFARABAD: Neelum Valley in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has introduced a new “Safe Tourism” app aimed at enhancing the safety of visitors to the picturesque region. The app, developed in collaboration with the AJK Information Technology (IT) Board, will help the local administration monitor tourist accommodations, contact details, and travel itineraries, said Nadeem Ahmed Janjua, Deputy Commissioner of Neelum.
Last year, Neelum Valley, known for its stunning landscapes, attracted over 550,000 tourists. The valley has a population of around 220,000 and is connected by 40 roads, though access can be challenging due to its mountainous terrain and weather conditions.
The app is designed to improve safety, especially in light of natural hazards like floods, avalanches, and landslides that often affect high-altitude areas. Tourist accidents, including those caused by selfies and negligence with heating appliances, have further highlighted the need for better safety measures.
In addition to the app, the local administration is mandating safety protocols for hotels, guesthouses, and rest houses, including fire extinguishers, emergency exits, and clear safety instructions. Tourists heading to high-altitude areas will also be required to use well-maintained vehicles operated by licensed drivers.
To ensure the safety of tourists, the app will record tourist data. In areas with poor internet access, the information will be sent by phone to the local police station for processing. This data will be submitted daily to ensure quick response times in case of emergencies.
