LAHORE: In a major step forward, the Punjab School Education Department has launched new subject groups for matric students, moving beyond the traditional science and arts streams.
Students will now have the option to study health sciences, agriculture, information technology (IT), and entrepreneurship, providing more career-focused and practical learning opportunities.
“This is the first major update to our education system in 70 years,” said Khalid Naeem Wattoo, Secretary of School Education Punjab. “These new groups align with international standards and prepare students for the modern job market.”
The revamped curriculum introduces a balance of theory (30 marks) and practicals (40 marks), ensuring hands-on learning. The total marks for matriculation exams will remain 1,100, with these new subjects integrated into the current framework.
Wattoo emphasized that no new teachers will be hired for this initiative. Instead, existing teachers, including engineers and computer instructors, will receive training to teach the updated syllabus.
Students can choose their preferred subject group when they enter 9th grade, allowing them to specialize in their chosen field throughout secondary school.
This forward-thinking approach promises to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed for modern industries while keeping education accessible and adaptable.
